The Denture Process
There are basically two types of dentures – full and partial. Based on the number of teeth missing, your dentist will discuss your options to determine what will work best for you. A partial denture is offered when you still retain at least several of your biological teeth. A full partial is needed when all teeth from an arch are missing.
You still have options that need to be decided … a conventional denture is placed after healing has taken place; an immediate denture allows for teeth to be inserted at the same time biological teeth are removed.
These choices pertain to full dentures.
If you require a partial denture, again you have choices. One option allows for the denture to be affixed using some type of framework that attaches to biological teeth. Or your dentist may recommend crowning abutment teeth that will hold the denture in place.
You will have impressions taken that will be used to make the denture. A model will be fabricated to allow for needed modifications before the final denture is cast.
I Have My Denture – What Can I Expect?
Always follow the instructions provided for the care of your denture. As with anything new, you will need to get used to your denture. Do not attempt to alter it any way; if something doesn’t feel right, return to your dentist for needed adjustments.
Eating and speaking with your new prosthesis may take a little getting used to. Start out with softer foods; as you get used to it, cut foods into small manageable bites chewing slowly. If you struggle with certain word sounds, practice by singing in the shower or speaking into a mirror.
You may be asked to wear your denture day and night for a few days. Once this adjustment period concludes, you will remove your denture at night. Always store in water to maintain needed moisture. Clean your denture before placing in your mouth using a denture brush and mild cleanser. Do not use toothpaste as it is too abrasive and can scratch your denture.
